Combat Love: Reviews

Combat Love is far more than an audacious coming of age story. It’s a reminder that beneath a successful adult’s polished exterior is the wildness of youth, vulnerability and loss.  Camerota shows us the hard-earned work of finding your voice. So, while you might pick up Combat Love because of the author’s familiar face, you won’t be able to put it down for her candor, wit, and storytelling. In an embarrassment of riches, Alisyn Camerota is as singular a writer as she is a broadcast journalist.

A great memoir walks a fine line between horror and humor, painful truths and partial truths, love and loss, joy and forgiveness. Combat Love does all that with a subtle hint of romance novel thrown in. Full disclosure I know Alisyn from her days as a reporter for "America's Most Wanted" when I was the show producer. This book captures her voice exactly as I remember it, although she never shared the painful memories of her youth. Her biting humor and adventurous personality come through accurately. She captures the time and place (places?) of her coming of age, and her search for home and love. Her descriptions of the punk rock scene, one I was very familiar with, capture the energy, smell, and deadly fatalism that was at its core. A powerful read, well worth your time.

Emmy Award–winning CNN anchor Camerota chronicles the loneliness, betrayal, and abandonment that led her on “a lifelong search for that elusive place called home.”  A candid chronicle of hard-won survival.

— Kirkus Reviews

Combat Love is a compelling and candid account of a time in Alisyn's youth where risk and danger were more present than security and comfort. It’s a heartbreaking and raw account of living on the cusp of things going very wrong. Readers will reap the rewards of Alisyn's story of survival.

Alisyn Camerota's memoir is an absolute delight—a vibrant tapestry of courage, vulnerability, wit, and warmth that captivated me from start to finish! With her expressive clarity, Alisyn invites us into her world, sharing the trials and triumphs of her adolescence with genuine charm. I was particularly enamored by her tales of the iconic New York/New Jersey punk scene of the late '70s and early '80s and the daring escapades she undertook to sneak into legendary venues like CBGB as a spirited underage teen. While the book had me on the edge of my seat with its heartrending moments, I found myself dreading the final pages, wishing her captivating journey could continue indefinitely.

What in incredible journey back in time Alisyn Camerota has crafted! Her story starts with relatable tales, so I could heartwarmingly recall childhood memories alongside Camerota. Then, before I realized it, I found myself empathizing deeply for her as she unfolded the details that set her experience growing up apart from any other. Her sense of determination, her street-smarts (and intellectual prowess), and her will to survive have brought Alisyn a very long way indeed. I particularly appreciate the sense of empowerment she conveys when working with victims on America's Most Wanted and also when revealing subtle, and some not-so-subtle, details about friends and family winding their way through some pretty daunting challenges.
Bravo, Alisyn!
